So, you’re in your office one day, as the CEO of a large business, and your head of R&D bursts through the door. In a rush of enthusiasm he cries. “We’ve come up with an idea for a brilliant new project, you must back this, it will make the company a fortune. It needs £500,000 investment.” He catches his breath, sits in front of you, and looks you seriously in the eye. “We should invent a way of transforming base metal – lead or tin – into pure gold!” He sits back in the chair with a triumphant look on his face.

The classic technology start-up is an exciting, dynamic agent for change and growth in our industries. They create jobs, disrupt old business, improve competitiveness and make a significant contribution to the country’s economy. All in all, start-ups are great.
