Internet of Things…… doing what, exactly?

In 10 years time, no-one will buy dumb kit.  Intelligence will be embedded, everywhere.  It will be taken for granted.

The consumer potential is already clear, but industrial processes and applications are a step behind. ‘Industry 4.0’.  The Internet of Things.  The new industrial revolution.  There’s rhetoric and spin, a buzz of excitement around concepts that are not yet clearly defined but where there is clear potential.

Brilliantly Boring

2014 has been the year of the yieldco.  This rarely seen corporate animal has evolved rapidly recently, and now herds of yieldcos have trudged into view, listing on London markets and around the world.  They have different antecedents, varying characteristics and no doubt changing futures.  But the one thing they all have in common is that they are boring.  Brilliantly boring.  2014 seems to be the year that cleantech has grown up to become dull.  It’s a great achievement.

Hot Opportunity

Puntios has recently successfully completed its project to research the commercial opportunity for low grade waste heat, in part funded by the Technology Strategy Board.  The project set out to identify the potential of the market, technologies and applications for prioritisation, and potential business models to realise the value.

We’ve concluded that a solution based approach is appropriate, and that despite various challenges, we’re sufficiently confident that we’ve set up a new business – Estus Power – which we’ll be launching in the autumn.  The company will offer an innovative business model, using low risk proven capital equipment, in a large industrial markets meeting clearly defined needs.

The heat is on

A Smart Grant has been awarded to renewable energy project developer EcoGenR8 to carry out a market assessment investigating the recovery of low grade waste heat and its viable and economic conversion into electricity. The grant was awarded by the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) with the aim of assisting businesses to engage in research and development projects in strategically important areas to enable the successful emergence of new products, processes and services.

EcoGenR8 have partnered with Puntios to deliver the project which will also be assisted by the AF ECO technical team. The project will determine whether energy recovery systems, such as organic rankine cycle (ORC) engines, can be successfully matched with industrial sources of low grade waste heat, seek to identify technology solutions, priority industrial applications and build a business case for new investment into this market.
